How capturing works in Aniimo: the three capture items, how weaknesses and ailments improve odds, boss capture rules and the habits that stop you wasting Champion Cubes.

Capturing is the heart of Aniimo's loop, and the mechanics underneath it are simple enough to learn in one session — but the difference between a wasted Great White Ball and a full dex runs through a handful of habits. This page covers the capture items, what actually moves your odds, and the special cases (bosses, weather forms, egg rewards) that behave differently.

The capture items

Three capture items see regular use:

Item Tier Typical use
Shimmer Cube Standard Common overworld forms; daily dex sweeping
Champion Cube High Elite and aggro-prone targets; rare regional forms
Great White Ball Heavy The hardest overworld captures — near-boss spawns and stubborn rare forms

Launch events hand out all three freely right now (see launch rewards), but treat Champion Cubes and Great White Balls as capital: spend them on targets only they can secure, not on basic-form filler that a Shimmer Cube would take anyway.

What actually improves your odds

Captures in Aniimo reward preparation more than luck. Four levers, in rough order of impact:

1. Lower the target's health

Like every game in the genre, a weakened target is a compliant target. Chip the creature down to a fraction of its health before throwing — but watch its ailments: some rare forms despawn or escalate when low, so for those, capture mid-fight at safe thresholds instead of right at death's door.

2. Stack elemental ailments

Combat skills apply elemental ailments that stack on the target — Fire skills apply burn stacks, and so on across elements. Ailed targets capture measurably better. The practical pattern:

  1. Bring a creature whose element matches an ailment the target is vulnerable to.
  2. Apply the ailment skill two or three times to build stacks.
  3. Throw during the ailment window.

Element matchups and ailment stacking both come from your roster — the team building guide explains how to build an ailment-applicator into your exploration squad.

3. Weaken or stagger with the right role

Breaker pressure works on capture targets too: a briefly staggered elite eats the throw instead of dodging or punishing it. If a rare regional form keeps breaking your capture attempt, swap to your Breaker for one stagger window first.

4. Time the throw to the creature's animation

Every species has movement loops — grazing pauses, idle looks, sleep cycles at night. Throws land during pauses. Ten seconds of watching the target's loop is worth more than three wasted cubes.

Boss captures

Field Boss (Alpha) Aniimo are capturable, and you want them: boss forms come with innate skill enhancement. But the fight is a real fight:

  • Expect a Break-gauge bar and heavy resistances until staggered — full breakdown in the combat section of team building.
  • Capture attempts read best right after a full Break window, when the boss is vulnerable and your ailment stacks are fresh.
  • The good news: bosses respawn in about one minute. A failed attempt costs you time, not the target. Report submissions after boss captures also pay Champion's Seals, the pact currency — so every attempt pays something.

Weather and night forms

Weather-locked and night forms capture like normal creatures — the hard part is finding them. Rain forms replace day spawns during rain; night forms share locations with their day versions; snow forms may need you to interact with the environment (the Redrock snowball melts are the famous example). When your local sky refuses to cooperate, remember the friend-world trick from the fast leveling guide: their rain counts for your dex.

Egg rewards are not captures

Two egg sources sit outside the capture system and are worth separating mentally:

  • Event and login eggs (like the mystery Shyott egg from launch) hatch directly into creatures — no throw, no odds.
  • Egg Grab Battle eggs are extraction objectives that pay rewards via mail after you escape by boat — see the mode overview.

Neither consumes cubes. When a guide says "save your cubes," it means capture cubes specifically.

A tidy capture workflow

  1. Spot unfamiliar silhouette → check its element and behavior; open the dex if it resembles something you own.
  2. Apply ailment with a matching-element link, 2–3 stacks.
  3. Chip or stagger to the safe window (Break first on elites).
  4. Throw during a pause with the cheapest cube that secures it; escalate only on escape.
  5. Log the entry — then check the dex's revealed spawn map for repeat farming.

Run that loop a few dozen times and capture stops being a dice roll and becomes a checklist — which is exactly what the dex-completion economy in this game rewards.
